From our many years of teaching, it has been observed that kids from Kinder to Grade 6 don’t find Science challenging. Most of them would say that Science is easy as it goes to memorization and simple laboratory experiments.

But for our students in Grades 7 to 10, they find Science as tough, head-breaking, and complicated. They often complain. “Why is there computation here?”, “Why are there numbers in Science?” and you may even hear “I hate Science!”. In short, Science makes them groan and whine.

But why is Science tougher to our big boys and girls?

1. Science requires critical thinking

We often think that Science only involves memorization of terms and concepts—nope! Science, especially that of in higher levels, often requires deep understanding, processing, and applying of its concepts and principles. Sadly, most students nowadays lack patience to discover, evaluate, and process the why’s and how’s of life, often relying to Google (technology) and being unable to think critically.

2. Science involves mathematics

Aside from critical thinking, it is a fact that subjects in Science (like Chemistry and Physics) require the ability to do accurate mathematical calculations. Hence, Science is laced with Mathematics—they’re BFFs for life! Thus, it is most likely that science will be tough to students who have a weak foundation in numerical ability, problem solving, and critical/ analytical thinking.

3. The “simple” Science lessons are ignored

Introductory Science lessons, such as conversion of units, usually seem to be simple and unimportant. So, students often get the idea that failing to understand these lessons wouldn’t have much impact. Anyway, they are *only* introductory lessons, right?

Nope—that is not! This “simple” conversion of units will be used again in Chemistry and Physics for computations and formula derivations. Most of the lessons in Science are connected one way or another, and failing to understand even a single theory, concept, principle, or process will seed to further CONFUSION. Ignore tough lessons today, pile up confusion tomorrow. Likewise, the future academic performance of the student suffers.

Helping them immediately before that happens is a must. We understand your limited time! No worries! Sophie’s Mind Tutorial Center can help.

Let us face the TOUGHER SCIENCE together! See ya!
